The Advantages to Slitting Rolls of HIPS

Euro Extrusions knows the many advantages of being able to slit a roll of HIPS.

When plastic is extruded, the general minimum width is 400mm, but with a slitting machine we can extrude a larger roll and then cut it into the desired width. Sometimes a smaller roll is required by our clients, so a slitting machine allows us to extrude a 500mm roll, for example, and then cut it in two to give two 250mm rolls.

The advantages to our customers are:
– We can achieve rolls with narrower widths than the minimum 400mm required
– Because we provide the required roll width, it saves our customers cutting time
– A slitting machine produces very good flat edges
– We are able to wind the roll very tightly

How it is done

A master roll is made on our extruders, which we then load onto one end of our slitting machine. We trim an edge off, which gets sent through to the granulator to be reused. The slit rolls then get pulled through onto new rolls, which are wound with gears so that as the roll grows the speed of the winders decreases. After it is done, the rolls are then taken off the machine with lifting equipment, they are weighted, wrapped and labelled ready to go to our customers.

HIPS or ‘High Impact Polystyrene Sheet’ is one of the most versatile and economical plastics available. This versatility makes it a very popular choice in comparison to other types of plastic. HIPS is not only desirable for its end-product properties but it can easily be thermoformed and is 100% recyclable. HIPS offers ease of forming, which is excellent for moulding packaging to a product’s specific size and shape.
