A new Plastic Packaging Tax is being introduced in April 2022. With the growing concerns over the environmental impact of plastic, this tax comes into action to encourage the use of more recycled material. It will work as an incentive for plastic packaging manufacturers to use recycled plastic more. It is believed this will increase the levels of recycling and collection of plastic waste.
This will apply to plastic packaging produced in or imported into the UK which does not contain at least 30% recycled plastic. The UK government has estimated that it will affect around 20K packaging manufacturers and importers.
According to GOV.UK: “One-off costs include familiarisation with the new rules, training for staff, registration with HMRC, and developing the required reporting framework to complete tax returns.”
Small businesses who manufacture or import less than 10 tonnes of plastic packaging per year will be exempt from paying the tax. Once the 10 tonnes are reached, businesses must register with HMRC and will be required to report data and pay for the tax quarterly.

Euro Extrusions is a market leader in the plastic sheet extrusion industry, and we supply customers across the UK with plastic products, including thermoplastic sheet and film.
At Euro Extrusions, we understand that plastic is a valuable resource and one of the most popular and useful materials in the world. The fact that plastic is used so much in the modern world means that it is important to handle it responsibly after it becomes waste.
Because of this, we strive to produce high quality products with minimal impact on the environment. We produce both virgin and recycled plastic sheet and film and we also offer our clients the ability to recycle their own plastic waste.
We are a specialist in High Impact Polystyrene Sheet, HIPs roll and HIPs film. The biggest advantage of this is that HIPs is a type of plastic that can be reshaped many times using heat, and so it is 100% recyclable.
At Euro Extrusions we can do HIPs containing 30% or more recycled content.
