Steeped in history, the factory was built in 1907 by the Mutual Mill Building Co.and run by the Premier Mill Co. which housed 812 cotton looms. Weaving continued until 1938 after which the building was taken over by OXO. Depending on the direction of the wind, at times a particular smell permeated the town. This was when you were downwind of the OXO works. The factory manufactured the little cubes of concentrated beef stock which were used to make gravy for the Sunday lunch. OXO were a major employer in the town and the company provided alternative employment to the other major industrial presence – cotton.
After failing to win approval for its plans to develop the Record Mill site in the town OXO relocated and both mills were closed by the end of 1992.
In 2000 the factory was purchased by Simon Whigham the MD of Euro Extrusions. Simon comments “It was the perfect site for us. Our business was growing and we needed room to expand and develop our HIPs production lines and processes. It is in a perfect position in the town and we have a great team of local people working for us”.
