Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic obtained by the polymerization of propylene. It is the second-most widely produced commodity plastic globally and it is often used in packaging and labelling. In addition it is used to create plastic parts for various industries, including the automotive industry, piping systems and textiles.
Polypropylene is so popular due to its durability and its ability to withstand higher temperatures than other plastics. Everyday items manufactured using PP include cling film, lunch boxes, margarine containers, yoghurt pots, syrup bottles and prescription bottles.
PP is the commodity plastic with the lowest density. With lower density, moulding parts with lower weight and more parts of a certain mass of plastic can be produced. It can also be produced in sheet form, widely used to produce stationary folders, packaging, and storage boxes.
A lot of its advantages come from the fact that it is a versatile, semi-transparent, lightweight, and recyclable material. It is a relatively inexpensive material, it possessed high flexural strength because of its semi-crystalline nature, it has a low coefficient of friction and it is very resistant to moisture.
