Plastic extrusion is not always easy to understand, and if you ask anyone on the street, they might give you a funny look and ask you what you are talking about. But plastic extrusion is everywhere and is part of our daily lives, and once you know what it is you will notice it everywhere.
So, what is plastic extrusion? Plastic extrusion is a manufacturing process in which raw plastic is melted and formed into whatever shape is desired. At Euro Extrusions we extrude the plastic into flat sheet and rolls, however other companies can extrude different shapes and profiles in a process called profile extrusion. Here are a few examples of what our flat extruded sheet is used for with some real-life examples of products or objects people use every day:
- Take away food: nowadays, many ready-to-eat foods in supermarkets and cafes are packaged in plastic containers made from extruding plastic. These include salad bowls, fruit salads, sandwiches, and yoghurts. Even some of the packaging in your local chippy is done this way. One of the most common plastics used for this is High Impact Polystyrene (HIPs), which is fit for the job for being strong, difficult to pierce, recyclable, cheap and retains heat well.
- Daily medication: the most common method of medication protection is a blister pack. These keep the pills separate and safe. It is also helpful to help users keep track of which medications they need to take and when.
- Driving and keeping you safe: extruded plastic comes into play when you are driving, be it on your way to work, or for a quick supermarket run. They are present in things like car interiors and exterior trims, profile extrusions are used for things like windscreen wipers too.
- Profile extrusion is used in the manufacture of UPVc windows and doors, plastic pipes, drains and cables.
These are only some of the daily life things where you can find extruded plastic. Extruded plastics are everywhere and have a multitude of different applications.
