Polystyrene is the most widely used plastic due to the fact that it is very cost-effective and that it can be coloured and moulded into pretty much any shape.
Whenever the word polystyrene is mentioned, our minds go straight to disposable foam cups or the soft inner packaging that is used for protection of delicate objects. And while this is where it is most commonly found, these are only a couple of many different ways polystyrene can be used.
Polystyrene in its many different forms is used in things like yoghurt pots, cd cases, disposable razors, car bumpers, etc. It can be painted, glued, and moulded. More importantly, it is entirely recyclable!
High impact polystyrene (HIPs) is a tough version of the plastic that is widely used for takeaway food containers. It is non-porous, making sure to protect the food from germs and bacteria and it is highly hygienic. Another important aspect when it comes to the food packaging is that HIPs is non-toxic and completely odourless.
HIPs is also very lightweight, which is important to help keep transportation costs to a minimum.
HIPs is ideal for fragile packaging solutions and can be easily vacuum thermoformed into packaging that offers protection as well as impact resistance.
