Is plastic our enemy? Or our friend? Learn about the advantages of plastic

Plastic products are everywhere you look, and in recent years we have been conditioned to believe that this is a bad thing. Swapping plastic straws for paper straws, reusable water bottles, bamboo toothbrushes, etc., have been widely popular all over the world.

Recycling and reusing are indeed a very important part of helping our environment to be sustainable, but this does not mean plastic is a bad thing in general. While people are proactively trying to reduce their plastic consumption, plastic is still all around us in everything we use. From your work laptop to your car, plastic is everywhere.

The reason for this is because plastic brings many advantages for the environment. Here are a few reasons why plastic is so widely used:

  • Lightweight – plastic being lightweight is one of its biggest advantages. It can make cars more fuel efficient without damaging their safety features. Reduce the carbon footprint of transporting goods in plastic containers being lighter (comparing to glass), that can also be reusable.

  • Cheap – there are other materials out there which work just as well as plastic, but plastic is the cheapest to make and the strongest and most versatile. We often think that, because something is inexpensive, the quality must be not so great, but this is not the case with plastic materials.

  • Durable – plastic is tough, resilient and shock-absorbent. This is one of the main reasons cars are made out of plastic, as this makes them safe to use. Plastic has also been used to create bullet proof vests that are stronger and lighter than other materials.

  • Recyclable – plastic is recyclable! It can be melted and reshaped into new products or even melted down into oil or fuel. And is one of the easiest and low carbon footprint products to recycle.

While it makes sense to reduce single plastic use, plastic itself is not the enemy we sometimes think it is. It has many advantages for us and the environment, it is more about choosing sensibly the right material for the task, and recycling as effectively as possible.
