Plastic Extrusion

Why recycling plastic is so important

Plastic Extrusion

Plastic is a valuable resource and one of the most popular and useful materials. The fact that it is now used so much means that it is important to handle it responsibly after it becomes waste.

Since almost every type of plastic can be recycled, the best outcome after its initial use is to be recycled and turned into a new product. If, for some reason, it cannot be recycled, many companies have found other ways to repurpose plastic that would otherwise be sent as waste to a landfill site. By avoiding single-use plastic and re-using and recycling items as many times as possible, the lifespan of plastic materials can be optimised.

In the U.K., recycling rates have continuously grown over the years, and 99% of local authorities offer collection facilities for plastic bottles.

Efficient recycling of plastic, or other re-usable methods, are a highly effective way to reduce costs, protect the environment, conserve non-reusable fossil fuels, reduce the amount of waste going into landfills and reduce the consumption of energy used to create new plastic.

Plastic recycling fits into the ‘waste hierarchy’, which is a process created to efficiently and sustainably deal with waste. Prevention deals with ensuring that products are manufactured in a way that makes them last a long time, using less materials and resources. Preparing for re-use is the step of cleaning, repairing and refurbishing plastic, to make sure it can be re-used. Other recovery occurs when plastic cannot be recycled for some reason. This ensures that incinerated plastic produces energy which can then be used for fuel, heat or electricity. The last step, disposal, occurs when resources cannot be saved in any way, and ultimately end up in a landfill or are incinerated without any energy recovery.

Plastic serves a lot of purposes in our day-to-day lives. We see it everywhere from grocery bags to our TVs, and it is important to recognise how valuable recycling can be.
